Ernst Eichler (Linguist)

Ernst Eichler (born May 15, 1930 in Niemes , Czechoslovakia ; † June 29, 2012 in Leipzig ) was a German linguist who was considered the nestor of Slavic onomastics in Germany.

Life

After graduating from high school in Delitzsch , Ernst Eichler studied Slavic and German at the University of Leipzig from 1950 to 1955 . Reinhold Olesch was one of his teachers there . Already in 1955 Eichler received his doctorate with his work The place and river names of the districts Delitzsch and Eilenburg . With his research results from the studies of the early history of Slavic dialects between Saale and Neisse , Eichler qualified as a professor in 1961 in Slavic philology. In 1975 he was appointed full professor for the Czech language and held this professorship until his retirement1995 from. Even after this time he continued his more than four decades of research at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the University of Leipzig.

From 1978 until his death, Eichler was a full member of the philological-historical class of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . He was also one of the founding members of the Niederlausitz working group for regional research at the Cottbus District Council in 1965 .

About 1000 publications come from Ernst Eichler, mainly on naming and settlement history in Germany and the western Slavic region.
