Every two years the members meet for the general assembly to elect the board.

history

After 1815, with growing interest in the German nation and German history, many historical associations were founded, including the Silesian Antiquities Association in 1819 and the Saxon Antiquities Association in 1824 - both in the vicinity of Niederlausitz. The first attempt to create a history association in Niederlausitz was made in 1826, when government councilor Süßmilch suggested this with a memorandum to the estates. Although some preparations were made, the plan was dropped in 1832. The contributions to the history and antiquity of Lower Lusatia (1835–1838) published by CSG Gallus and Johann Wilhelm Neumann did not lead to the establishment of an association.

At the suggestion of Rudolf Virchow , the Lower Lusatian Society for Anthropology and Prehistory was founded in Calau on June 3, 1884 , following the example of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory, and today's society sees itself in this tradition. The first chairman was the Calau district doctor Ewald See (until 1892). Hugo Jentsch (1892–1916), Karl Gander (1916–1930) and Rudolf Lehmann (1930–1945) later took the chair. The Niederlausitzer Mitteilungen functioned as the club's magazine, 29 volumes of which were published between 1885 and 1941. The name changes to the Niederlausitz Society for Anthropology and Archeology (1889) and Niederlausitz Society for History and Archeology (1928) reflect the changing research interests. While prehistoric finds were the focus in the beginning, the history of the country, dialects, legends, customs and names were also researched later. The club museum established in Cottbus in 1887 was incorporated into the Cottbus municipal museum in 1924.

After the Second World War , the association was initially unable to continue its activities. It was not until 1954 that Rudolf Lehmann founded a working group for historical regional studies in Lübben , the history of which ended four years later with the dissolution of the state archive in Lübben .

In 1965 Friedrich Redlich , Erwin Seemel , Ernst Eichler , Kurt Baller, Gerhard Krüger, Georg Haak, Joachim Schölzel u. a. the Niederlausitz working group for regional research at the Cottbus District Council , which held two meetings a year. In 1967 he started the publication of the journal Niederlausitzer Studien , which was renamed in 1971 at the request of the district council in the past and present of the district of Cottbus . By 1989, 23 issues and several thematic special issues had been published. In 1981 the working group received the Carl Blechen Prize, 1st class.

At its 50th meeting on April 21, 1990 in Lübben, the working group decided to transform it into the Niederlausitzer Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Landeskunde eV Articles will be published in the journal, again entitled Niederlausitzer Studien .
