Wilhelm Schwartz (born September 4, 1821 in Berlin ; † May 16, 1899 there ) was a German high school teacher ( classical philologist ), collector of sagas and writer.

Live and act

Wilhelm Schwartz was born as the son of the inspector (director) of the Friedrichs orphanage Rummelsburg in Berlin and attended the Berlinische Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster from 1831 to 1838 . He then studied philology at the University of Berlin and the University of Leipzig until 1843 . With a treatise on mythology , he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . After the senior teacher examination, he worked at the Friedrichwerder Gymnasium in Berlin from 1844 , where he was appointed high school professor in 1862 . In 1864 he changed to the grammar school in Neuruppin as director , in 1872 came to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium (Posen) in the same capacity and in 1882 to the new Luisengymnasium Berlin . Shortly before he retired in 1894, Kaiser Wilhelm II gave him the character of a Geh. Government Council .

He was married to Anna Lehnerdt († December 28, 1897).

Folklore

From 1839 to 1849 Schwartz collected the sagas , fairy tales , customs and superstitions of the Mark Brandenburg and Northern Germany on hikes with his brother-in-law Adalbert Kuhn ( memories from my hikes in the years 1837–1849 . In: Archives of Brandenburgia. Volume 1, p. 143ff.) . In his writings he dealt with research into legends. In addition to the older Brandenburg history, he began prehistoric excavations in Neuruppin and continued them in Posen . He donated parts of his collections to the Museum in the Neuruppin High School, the National Museum (Posen) , the Museum of Ethnology , the Folk Costume Museum and the Märkisches Provincial Museum .
