Wilhelm Ludwig Hertz
Wilhelm Ludwig Hertz (born June 26, 1822 in Hamburg ; † June 5, 1901 in Berlin ) was a Berlin bookseller and publisher .
Life
The son of Adelbert von Chamisso and Marianne Hertz attended the Friedrich-Werdersche Gymnasium in Berlin and actually wanted to be a painter. Instead, he started his apprenticeship with Stange in Berlin in 1840 and then with Friedrich Johannes Frommann in Jena as a bookseller. In 1844 he worked as an assistant at Perthes , Besser & Mauke in Hamburg. In 1847 Wilhelm Hertz married his cousin Fanny (* 1826; † 1913) in Hamburg and bought the Besser bookstore in Berlin in the same year . In 1848 the son Hans Adolf was born.
In the following decades Wilhelm Hertz published - in addition to scientific works - Theodor Fontane , Emanuel Geibel , Gottfried Keller , Julian Schmidt , Herman Grimm and his friend Paul Heyse . More than a thousand titles were published by Wilhelm Hertz. Just one example: In 1893 the publishing house published the Ursley novel , which was successful in terms of reprints . That was the first major prose work by 29-year-old Ricarda Huch .
In 1879, Wilhelm Hertz headed the German Booksellers Association in Leipzig, after having been on the board since 1854.
In 1875 the son Hans Adolf Hertz became a partner in the Besser bookstore. After the son died in 1895, Wilhelm Hertz sold to Cotta's successor in Stuttgart.
Wilhelm Hertz found his final resting place in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg . His grave has been dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honor grave since 1984 .
When his daughter Emma Hertz married in 1879, he was the father-in-law of the Berlin publisher Fritz Springer . The classical philologist Martin Hertz was his brother.
