America, Philippines
- January 1 : Queens and Staten Island become boroughs of New York .
- January 17th : The US takes possession of Wake Island .
- January 20 : US President William McKinley sets up the Schurman Commission for the Benevolent Annexation of the Philippines .
- January 23 : In Malolos City , the Katipunan revolutionary movement proclaims the First Philippine Republic . The revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo is sworn in as president. Apolinario Mabini becomes Prime Minister.
- February 4 : The Philippine-American War begins.
- February 5 : In the two-day Battle of Manila during the Filipino-American War , the Americans have the upper hand while the native troops are forced to withdraw into the hinterland.
- February 14 : United States Congress approves " voting machines " for federal elections.
- US troops can take Malolos as early as March 31st . The first government then fled to Calumpit , which was captured on April 26th . The seat of government is then moved to Cabanatuan . On May 9th, Pedro Paterno becomes the new Prime Minister because the disabled Mabini is no longer able to cope with the strain. The Congress resides in San Isidro from May 13th . - November 28 : British troops repel a Boer advance at the Battle of Modder River with heavy losses of their own .
