Piet van Mever

Piet A. van Mever (born January 27, 1899 in Zaandam ; † May 11, 1985 in Zaandam ) was a Dutch composer and conductor .

At the age of 9 he started taking violin lessons with his twin brother. Afterwards he studied violin for about 7 years with Louis Zimmermann , at that time first concertmaster with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, and composition , instrumentation and conducting with Cornelis Dopper , then conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Later he studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Paul Amadeus Pisk twelve-tone technique according to Arnold Schönberg .

In 1929 he began his musical career as a music teacher and conductor. He conducted several choirs, the Royal Harmony "Excelsior", Wormerveer, the Stedelijk (Fanfare) Orkest, Pumerend and the Zaandam Chamber Orchestra. In 1941, through a friendship with Eduard Flipse, he became second conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Rotterdam . In 1949 he entered the service of the City of Rotterdam to work for the Rotterdam Art Foundation and the Art Commission for Young People. As a result of this activity, he was commissioned to write music for certain classic Dutch plays that were performed in the Dijkzicht open-air theater . His job was also to develop guidelines for amateur music, including guidelines for government grants, for festivals and youth orchestras. He has also drawn up instructions for the nationwide training of conductors in wind bands and fanfare orchestras.

During this time he was also conductor of the Hague Symphony Orchestra, the Delft Royal Harmony Orchestra, the Royal Airline Chamber Orchestra ( KLM ) and Shell Harmonie.

From 1958 to 1968 he was a lecturer for wind orchestra and fanfare orchestra direction and instrumentation at the Utrecht Conservatory .
