The Campeonato Sudamericano 1922 was the 6th edition of the South American continental football championship and took place for the second time in Brazil from September 17 to October 22.

For the first time, all five members of CONMEBOL took part in this soccer tournament. As before, the championship was held in the league system (everyone against everyone). If there was a tie in first place, a playoff was planned. All matches were played in Rio de Janeiro at the Estadio dos Laranjeiras ( Fluminense FC stadium ). At that time the stadium held around 30,000 spectators.

Soccer South American champions 1922 hosted Brazil for the second time.

Playoff

The tie between Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay made a decision-making round for these three teams necessary. However, since Uruguay renounced this round due to anger about the referee's performance in the duel against Paraguay and left early, there was now a play-off between Brazil and Paraguay.

October 22, 1922
Brazil - Paraguay 3: 0 (1: 0)

Just in time for the play-off, the Brazilians achieved their best form at this tournament. They dominated the entire 90 minutes. For Brazil it was the second title win.

Brazil showed once again that it was a bank at home. As a rule, there was no chance at tournaments abroad, but as in 1919 it remained unbeaten in all games at home. The team increased from game to game. After the tired 1-1 draw against Chile at the start, the team's performance culminated in a 2-0 win over Argentina, which put an end to the defending champions' ambitions. However, in the end they were not alone at the top of the table - also here a parallel to 1919 - but had to share this position, burdened with three draws, with Paraguay and Uruguay, so that the Brazilians had to make the decision-making round. That it came to that, however, they owed the referees from their own country, who helped ensure that the competition also had three minus points in the end.

Paraguay was the big surprise of this tournament. Just reaching the decision-making round was a huge triumph for the outsider. The highlight was the 1-0 win against Uruguay, which came about with the kind help of the Brazilian referee. Before the last game against Argentina, the Paraguayans even had it in their hands to win the tournament through a draw or a win. But if they had won against Uruguay with the help of the referee (see below), it was now another Brazilian referee (Enrique Vignal) who favored the Argentines with numerous dubious decisions. The Paraguayan team even temporarily left the field in the 79th minute in protest against a dubious penalty for Argentina. The duel was lost for Paraguay and you had to go to the decisive round.

Uruguay, like Paraguay, became a tragic team at this tournament. After victories against Chile and arch-rivals Argentina and a 0-0 draw against Brazil, a draw against Paraguay was enough for the "Urus" to win their fourth Campeonato Sudamericano title. From a sporting point of view, it was therefore not the happiest decision to let the Brazilian referee "Pedro Santos" lead the game; because only a defeat of the Uruguayans would have brought the Brazilians back into the game. So the Uruguayans were mercilessly whistled and lost with 0: 1. Uruguay was tied with Brazil and Paraguay at the top of the table. But Uruguay, out of anger over this referee performance, decided not to play a decision-making round and left early.

Defending champion Argentina disappointed in this "Copa". After the brilliant 4-0 win against Chile at the start, there were two disappointing defeats against the "Urus" and against Brazil. It was not until the last game against Paraguay that the Argentines were able to make it victorious again with the kind help of the referee. But fourth place was certainly not enough.

After a one-year break, Chile failed to convince on its comeback at the Campeonato Sudamericano. After a satisfactory 1-1 draw against hosts Brazil, they had absolutely no chance in all subsequent games.
