The 1967 Campeonato Sudamericano was the 29th edition of the South American continental football championship and took place in Uruguay for the sixth time from January 17th to February 2nd. Brazil and Peru did not participate. Venezuela was there for the first time since joining CONMEBOL in 1952 .

There was a change in the competition mode. For the first and only time in the history of the Copa, the competition was divided into a qualification and a final tournament. Four teams were automatically set for this. In addition to Argentina and Uruguay, these were defending champions Bolivia and newcomer Venezuela. In the qualification, which took place at the end of 1966, two teams played for two more places in the first and second leg. The "final round" was played as before in the league system (everyone against everyone). If there was a tie in first place, a playoff was planned. All games were played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. As in previous tournaments, some games were played one after the other as part of a double event on one day.

Defending champion Bolivia scored no goal, only achieved a draw and thus disappointed across the board. The hosts Uruguay used their home advantage for the sixth time, winning every tournament in their own country and becoming undefeated for the eleventh time as South American football champions.

The winning squad of the Uruguayan team consisted of the following players:

Jorge Acuña (Sud América), Elgar Baeza (Nacional), Miguel Angel Bazzano (Danubio), Omar Caetano (Peñarol), Jacinto Callero (Nacional), Héctor Carlos Cingunegui (Nacional), Pablo Forlán (Peñarol), Abayubá Ibáñez (Defensor) , Carlos Martínez (Fénix), Ladislao Mazurkiewicz (Peñarol), Julio Montero Castillo (Nacional), Juan Mujica (Nacional), Jorge Oyarbide (Nacional), Juan Carlos Paz (Racing Club), Domingo Salvador Pérez (Nacional), Pedro Rocha ( Peñarol), Héctor Salvá (Danubio), Rubén Techera (Nacional), José Urruzmendi (Nacional), Luis Alberto Varela (Peñarol), Luis Alberto Vera (Fénix) - Trainer: Juan Carlos Corazzo
