Juan Mujica , full name Juan Martín Mujica Ferreira or also called Juan Martín Mugica Ferreira , (born  December 22, 1943 in Casablanca , Uruguay , †  February 11, 2016 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan football player and coach.

Player career

society

The 1.76 meter tall, used in the position of left defender Mujica belonged to the squad of the Rampla Juniors in the Primera División from 1961 to 1966 . With the Montevideans he finished the 1964 season as runner-up in Uruguay. He then moved to Nacional Montevideo on February 27, 1966 , where he was under contract until 1972. In the first year of membership he became Uruguayan champion. With the Bolsos he made it to the finals of the Copa Libertadores in 1967 . There Mujica was part of the starting line-up in all three games, but ultimately could not avoid the defeat against the Argentine opponent Racing Club . Successful years for Mujica followed. In 1969, 1970 and 1971 he was again Uruguayan champion with his team. In 1969 they reached the final of the Copa Libertadores again . Mujica started again from the beginning in both matches. But this time too, the Estudiantes de La Plata team had to be allowed to take precedence on the winners' podium. Two years later the time had come and the Bolsos returned the favor by hosting this international competition against the last-named final opponent, who was again the final opponent this time. For the first time in the club's history, Nacional won the Copa . However, Mujica only appeared in the decisive final round as a replacement for Ildo Maneiro in the second final . In the subsequent fight for the World Cup , which was also won , Mujica came on as a substitute for Luis Cubilla in the second leg against Panathinaikos Athens .

Then in 1972 Mujica went abroad. He joined the French club OSC Lille from the season 1972/73 to 1974/75 . From 1975 to 1978 he chose the RC Lens as the second French station . Eventually he returned to Uruguay, where he played for Liverpool Montevideo in 1978 and was last active in 1979 for Defensor .

National team

Mujica was also a member of the senior team of Uruguay , for which he completed 22 international matches between May 18, 1966 and June 20, 1970. He scored two international goals. At the South American Championships in 1967 he won the title with the Celeste. Mujica also took part in the 1970 World Cup with Uruguay . There he played a total of six games, playing all of the group phase and the final round, and on the way to fourth place for the Uruguayans in the tournament standings, he scored a goal in their first game against Israel.

Coaching

As coach of Nacionals, Mujica won the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup in 1980 and also looked after the team during the defeat at the Copa Interamericana 1981 . Other teams he coached over the course of his more than 20 year coaching career included Deportes Tolima , Millonarios FC and Atlético Medellín in Colombia and Deportivo Saprissa and Deportiva Alajuelense (1999/2000) in Costa Rica . After the last-mentioned station, he completed a course at UEFA in Germany. Later he was chairman of the Uruguayan coaching association. In 2004 he took over the Alianza association in El Salvador .

Others

In later years Mujica got into financial distress, so that on January 18, 2012, a legislative initiative was introduced in parliament for a pension for the former football player based on his sporting merits.
