The Club Estudiantes de La Plata , or Estudiantes de La Plata for short or simply Estudiantes , is a sports club from La Plata , Buenos Aires Province , Argentina , which is internationally known primarily for its football department .
In addition to football, the club also offers handball , basketball , volleyball , hockey , swimming , lifeguarding , diving , taekwondo , judo , boxing , golf , gymnastics , aerobics , running , roller skating , tennis , weightlifting and e-sports . The club in Argentina can be found at the top in almost all sports.
history
The club, founded by students on August 4, 1905, had its heyday in the late 1960s when it won the Copa Libertadores three times in a row. The following World Cup games - Estudiantes won the title in 1968 - are among the most legendary chapters in football history.
In the 2006 season, the club was again Argentine champions after 23 years. At the end of the game round, the students were tied with Boca Juniors at the top of the table. In the playoff for the championship, the provincial club surprisingly beat the favorites 2-1.
The club reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana in 2008 , but had to admit defeat to SC Internacional after 1-0 in the first leg and 1-1 in the second leg.
The following year they won the Copa Libertadores for the fourth time with a 0-0 and 2-1 victory over Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte 39 years after their last title win. This qualified the club for the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates . In this one finally reached the final, which was lost with 1: 2 n. V. against FC Barcelona .
In the following season (Apertura 2010), Estudiantes won the Argentine championship after a dramatic championship duel with CA Vélez Sársfield . Led by captain Juan Sebastián Verón and striker Gaston Fernandez , the Pincharattas celebrated their fifth championship title.
Since November 2019, after a 14-year absence at the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata, the club has been playing its home games again in the renovated Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi, which can hold 30,018 spectators .

Remarkable
The team's nicknames are Los Pincharratas ("The Rat Picks") - which comes from the fact that the University of La Plata is particularly famous for the medical faculty whose students love to spear rats - and El León ("The Lion").
