Bernardo Daniel Romeo (born September 10, 1977 in Tandil ) is a former Argentine soccer player and current coach .

Career

Club career

Bernardo Daniel Romeo, nicknamed "Bernigol", began his career as a center forward in 1995 in the Argentine Primera División at Estudiantes de La Plata . In 1999 he moved to Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro in order to move to the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV in January 2002 . After initial difficulties, he initially prevented relegation to the second division by eight goals in the second half of the 2001/02 season and was successful in the following season after an injury-related setback ( herniated disc ) : With 18 goals in 33 games, he was statistically speaking the most effective Bundesliga striker. At Hamburger SV, he played a total of 77 Bundesliga games and scored 35 goals; in 2002 and 2003 he was the club's most successful goalscorer. In 2003 he won the League Cup with the club . When Thomas Doll became the new coach of HSV, he rarely used Romeo. The coach needed a playing center forward for his game concept, while Romeo can be described as a classic penalty area player. Therefore, despite his excellent quota, the club loaned the player to Real Mallorca in January 2005 . For the Spanish club, Romeo completed ten games in the Primera División and scored two goals. From July 2005 to July 2007 Romeo played for CA Osasuna in the Primera División. During the season he scored five goals in 40 games. In the 2006/07 season Romeo played with CA Osasuna in qualifying for the Champions League against Hamburger SV. CA Osasuna were eliminated after a 0-0 and 1-1 draw on the away goals rule and continued to play in the UEFA Cup. There the team made it to the semi-finals, in which league rivals Sevilla FC were the final destination. In qualifying for the Champions League, Bernardo Romeo only played in the first leg in Hamburg, while he made seven appearances in the UEFA Cup. In July 2007 he returned to his home country to the Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro.

For the 2010/11 season Romero moved to Quilmes AC . He stayed there for only a year and returned to Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro before ending his career. He scored a total of 99 goals in 178 games for San Lorenzo and is ninth on the all-time list of the best.

Romeo played five international matches for the Argentine national team . In 1997 he became world champion in Malaysia with the U-20 national team of his country.
