Tandil is the capital of the Partido Tandil of the same name . The university city is located in the middle of the province of Buenos Aires , Argentina , around 360 kilometers south-southwest of the capital Buenos Aires . It has 116,917 inhabitants (as of 2010, INDEC ).
history
The town, located in a hilly area, was founded on April 4, 1823 by Brigadier General Martín Rodríguez as Fuerte Independencia (Independence Fortress). In the course of the Conquista del desierto , the campaign led by General Roca to conquer Patagonia , in which the indigenous people were largely exterminated, the European presence increased and numerous immigrants poured into the city. Most of them were Spaniards and Italians , but Basques and Danes also formed strong communities. Tandil was granted town charter in 1895 and developed into a tourist attraction that attracted people from Buenos Aires, other parts of Argentina and outside of it.
The name Tandil is derived from the Mapuche words tan ("falling") and lil ("rock"). It is probably a reference to the Piedra Movediza ("moving stone"), a boulder measuring about 10 m × 5 m, which was placed on the edge of a precipice in a miraculously balanced position and was sometimes made to "wobble" slightly by the wind. The stone fell from the mountain top on February 29, 1912 for reasons unknown. On May 17, 2007 a new Piedra Mevodiza , an almost exact replica, was installed in place of the old Movediza. However, this is immobile and hollow. President Kirchner was also present for the inauguration of the new Piedra Movediza .
Aviation pioneers Pablo Suarez in 1895 and Guido Dinelli in 1904 attempted to glide from the top of Garibaldi Hill.
