Partido (administrative unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Partidos are the highest-ranking administrative units below the provincial level in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires .

In contrast to the so-called Departamentos of the other provinces of Argentina, the 135 Partidos are also considered to be Municipios (roughly: municipalities ). They are divided into localities (localidades) which, however, do not have an independent administrative structure. The town in which the administration is based is called cabecera .

At the top of the administrative structure of the Partidos is the intendente (for example: mayor ), who exercises the executive power. The intendent appoints the authorities of the localities into which the partido is divided.

The legislature consists of the consejo deliberante (council of the partidos) with 6 to 24 members, depending on the number of inhabitants of the partidos, and the consejo escolar (school council) with 4 to 10 members. All organs are elected by the people every four years.
