Kaarta was a short-lived Bambara empire to the west of what is now the state of Mali . The area was northwest of the Senegal River .

history

When Bitòn Coulibaly , the founder of the Bambara Empire , exercised more control over Ségou , part of the population was dissatisfied with his rule and fled west. In 1753 they established the Kaarta Empire on the territory of the former Ghanaian Empire and made the city of Nioro du Sahel their capital. According to Louis Faidherbe , it had an area of approximately 54,500 km².

The empire lost its independence in 1854 through the jihad (holy war) of Al-Hajj Omar in West Africa. He took Nioro and killed the King of Kaarta, (Fama) Mamady Kandian, and his entire family. France's Colonel Louis Archinard later conquered the territory of the former Kaarta Empire in 1890.
