Jorge Bátiz (born December 8, 1933 in Tandil ) is a former Argentine cyclist and national champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Jorge Bátiz was one of the first Argentine cyclists to be internationally successful. In his youth he also played football in addition to cycling , but then finally decided to cycle at the age of 18. In 1952, 1953 and 1954 Bátiz was the Argentine champion in the sprint . In 1955 he won the gold medal in the sprint at the Pan-American Games in Mexico City , and at the UCI Track World Championships in Milan in 1955 he was runner-up; He was able to repeat this success in 1956 .

In 1958, Bátiz went over to the pros , competed and won smaller road races, including in Europe. As a professional he was able to win the 1958 Grand Prix of Bogota in the sprint. He started in 14 six-day races, five of which he won, including that of Buenos Aires in 1958 with the Italian Fausto Coppi .

Professional

In 1964, Jorge Bátiz ended his active cycling career and became the Argentine national coach. When a six-day race was held again in Buenos Aires in 1999 after a long break, he acted as sports director.

Honors

In 1956, Bátiz was named Argentina's Sportsman of the Year .

The velodrome in Corral de Bustos , Córdoba Province , is after him Velodromo Jorge Bátiz named.
