Life

María Cristina Kiehr descends from Danish ancestors. She received her first musical training (violin) in her Argentinean hometown of Tandil. At the age of 17 she discovered her singing voice and her love for early music. After a year of singing lessons in Argentina, she decided in 1983 to go to Europe for further singing studies in order to continue her baroque singing with René Jacobs and at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . At the same time she studied singing technique with the opera singer Eva Krasznai -Gombos in Basel.

Maria Crístina Kiehr has participated in numerous concerts and recordings, including the Concerto Vocale under René Jacobs , the Concerto Köln , the Cantus Cölln , Hespèrion XX (now Hesperion XXI) under Jordi Savall and the Ensemble Concerto Soave with harpsichordist Jean-Marc Aymes . The latter ensemble is particularly dedicated to the Italian music of the early 17th century.

Kiehr is particularly committed to early baroque music. She co-founded the Ensemble La Colombina , which mainly focused on the repertoire of the Spanish and Latin American Renaissance. Kiehr made her operatic debut in Innsbruck in Francesco Cavalli's Giasone under René Jacobs. Her opera repertoire includes all the important roles by Monteverdi , Purcell , Telemann , Gluck and Vivaldi . But she also appeared on the stage in many lesser-known works.

In addition, she conducts source research, reconstruction and new discoveries as well as their premieres with regard to early music. Many of her CD recordings have received awards. Her recording of Caldara's Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (Kiehr in the role of Maria Magdalena ) under René Jacobs won the 1997 Grammophon Award.
