The Sevilla Fútbol Club , known as FC Sevilla in German-speaking countries , is a Spanish football club from the Andalusian city of Seville , which plays in the Primera División . With six titles, Sevilla FC is the record winner of the Uefa Cup and the UEFA Europa League and one of the most successful Spanish clubs internationally.
The team wears white jerseys for home games and red jerseys for away games. The fans of Sevilla FC are called Sevillistas . The club's “archenemy” is the city rival Betis Sevilla ; their direct encounter is called Derbi sevillano .
In 1958, the club opened the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium , which currently has 43,833 spectators. The club's own stadium was the venue for the 1982 World Cup in Spain - at that time it had a capacity of 70,000 because there were more standing stands. It is not far from the eastern outskirts of Seville within walking distance of Santa Justa Central Station .
The club operates its own radio station, Sevilla FC Radio , the television station Sevilla FC Televisión and publishes the newspaper Sevilla FC Periódico .
The club's second team has been playing under their traditional name Sevilla Atlético (previously Sevilla FC B ) since the 2007/08 season .
history
The club was founded on January 25, 1890 and rose to the Primera División in 1934 . After finishing 2nd in 1940 and 1943, Sevilla FC became Spanish champions in 1946 . The club was twice runner-up in the following years (1951 and 1957). The Spanish cup competition, the Copa del Rey , was won by Sevilla FC in 1935, 1939, 1948, 2007 and 2010. In 1955 and 1962 the final was reached. Sevilla FC were the first Andalusian club to play in the European Cup in the 1957/58 season.
In the 2004/05 season, Sevilla FC failed to qualify for the Champions League when city rivals Betis finished last in qualifying in the Primera Division.
On May 10, 2006, Seville won the UEFA Cup final against English club Middlesbrough in Eindhoven , the end of the game being 4-0. The final of the European Supercup was also won: in the Stade Louis II , Sevilla FC beat the Champions League winner FC Barcelona 3-0 on August 25th .
On May 16, 2007, Sevilla FC defended their title as the second team in the history of the UEFA Cup after Real Madrid in 1985/86. The Andalusians sat down in the Spanish final at Hampden Park in Glasgow after a 2: 2 (1: 1, 1: 1) after extra time with 3: 1 on penalties against the league rivals and RCD Espanyol Barcelona, who had been unbeaten in this competition by.
In June 2007, Sevilla won in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu of Madrid the cup final against Getafe with 1: 0th In August 2007, Sevilla defeated Real Madrid in the Supercopa de España game .
On August 25, 2007, the first day of the 2007/08 season , a tragic incident occurred: In the game against Getafe FC (4-1), Antonio Puerta collapsed in the 30th minute. His teammates prevented him from swallowing his tongue; after the next substitution he collapsed again in the cabin and suffered cardiovascular arrest , of which he died three days later.
On May 19, 2010, Sevilla FC won the Copa del Rey for the fifth time at the Camp Nou in Barcelona by beating Atlético Madrid 2-0 .
In the 2010 Spanish Supercup final, Sevilla lost 4-0 in the second leg against FC Barcelona after a 3-1 win in the first leg. In the 2010/11 season they were eliminated in the play-off round of the Champions League against Sporting Braga . In the group stage of the Europa League , the Andalusians played against the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain , the German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and the Ukrainian representative Karpaty Lemberg and took second place in the table. In the sixteenth finals they were eliminated against the eventual winner FC Porto .
In the league, the team finished fifth. Thus, the team played in the play-off round for the Europa League in the following season . There the team was eliminated from the German Bundesliga club Hannover 96 . In the league it was only enough to ninth place, which means that the team did not qualify for the qualifying rounds for the European Cup. Even in the 2012/13 season, it was only enough for Sevilla FC to place ninth in the table, with the team then unexpectedly qualifying for the Europa League qualification , as Rayo Vallecano had been withdrawn from the UEFA.
In the 2013/14 season, Sevilla FC played for participation in a European Cup competition and prevailed against FK Mladost Podgorica in the third qualifying round and against Śląsk Wroclaw in the play-offs . For the first time since 2010/11 they played again in a European cup competition. Sevilla FC prevailed in the group stage as group winners ahead of Slovan Liberec , SC Freiburg and Estoril Praia . In the round of 16, the Andalusians defeated the Slovenian representative NK Maribor and in the round of 16, FC won 4: 3 on penalties after a dramatic second leg in the derby against Betis Sevilla . In the quarter-finals they defeated FC Porto ; the semi-final they met the FC Valencia . The club won the first leg 2-0. A 3-1 defeat in the second leg was enough to reach the final, as Sevilla had scored more away goals. In the final they defeated Benfica Lisbon 4-2 on penalties . This was the third title win in this competition after 2006 and 2007. In the league, Sevilla FC finished fifth and qualified for the Europa League. In 2015 , Sevilla won the UEFA Europa League for the fourth time and has been the record holder in this competition ever since. In 2016, Sevilla became the first team to win the Europa League for the third time in a row. On August 21, 2020, Sevilla FC won the Europa League final again, this time against Inter Milan 3-2.
Symbols
coat of arms
Since its inception, the association has used a coat of arms with a double circle. The name of the club and the date it was founded were written in the outer circle. In the inner circle, the letters “SFC” were intertwined on a white background (just like in today's form.) The first coat of arms was designed by Juan Lafita.
In 1922 Pablo Rodríguez Blanco designed the second coat of arms. The coat of arms was divided into three parts and was given the silhouette of a heart. Three figures were added to the left of the coat of arms. They are the city saints of Seville: Isidore of Seville , Ferdinand III. of Castile and Leander of Seville . The three also appear on Seville's city arms. The letters SFC are shown on the right. An ancient football is shown when the three fields meet. The origin of the red and white stripes is not clear.
Hymns
Sevilla FC has two club anthems:
- Official anthem : It dates from 1983. The lyrics were written by Angel Luis, the music composed by Manuel Osquiguilea de Roncales.
- Centenary hymn : This hymn was created in 2005 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Sevilla FC. It was composed by the singer Javier Labandon El Arrebato.
