Davor Šuker [ ˈdaʋɔr ˈʃukɛr ] (born January 1, 1968 in Osijek , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian football player . He is the President of the Croatian Football Association ( HNS ).
Career
In the homeland
At the age of 14 Davor Šuker joined his hometown club NK Osijek . In 1987, as a 19-year-old, he first came into the focus of the international football world. At the U-20 World Cup in Chile , he became world champion with Yugoslavia and won the silver shoe. After becoming top scorer at NK Osijek last season in 1989, he moved to Dinamo Zagreb . Šuker was nominated for the squad of the Yugoslav national team at the 1990 World Cup , but had no use during the finals. He was twice runner-up with Dinamo Zagreb and moved abroad in 1991. Since July 5, 2012 he has been President of the Croatian Football Association HNS .
In Spain
He went to Sevilla FC , but initially the climate and concern for his family had a negative impact on him. After a weak season, Šuker showed an increasing form in 1992/93. For a short time, Diego Maradona was his teammate.
In the 1993/94 season he scored 23 goals alongside Gabriel Moya, who had come to Sevilla FC from Atlético Madrid . A year later he was able to score 17 hits. At the European Championships in England in 1996 , Šuker played a prominent role. With strong performances, Croatia reached the quarter-finals, in which they were defeated by the later title holder Germany .
After the European Championship in 1996, many clubs wanted to sign the player. Real Madrid finally made the race for a transfer fee of DM 7 million. With the royal team , Šuker confirmed the hopes placed in him. In the first year the team became national champions. In 1998 he won the Champions League trophy with Real Madrid and was the top scorer with 24 goals; in the final against Juventus Turin , however, he was not in the starting lineup.
At the following World Cup he was the top scorer of the World Cup in France with six goals. In the quarter-finals, a 3-0 win against Germany was the revenge for the defeat at the European Football Championship two years earlier. Croatia took the lead against hosts France in the semi-finals through Šuker, but France managed to get into the final with two Thuram goals. In the end, Croatia finished third.
In England
Just one year after his triumph as World Cup top scorer, he had to leave Madrid for Arsenal in 1999 . There he could not prevail and was transferred to West Ham United after a year . There, too, it did not go as desired, whereupon he was without a club at the beginning of the 2001/02 season.
In Germany
In autumn 2001 he finally accepted an offer from the German club 1860 Munich . In Munich he first fought for a regular place, but was then pushed out of the starting line-up by the then young star Benjamin Lauth . In total, the Croatian striker was on the ball in 25 Bundesliga games .
With the Croatian national team, he took part in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan. A 1-0 defeat against Mexico at the tournament there was his last international match. The team was eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2003 he ended his football career.

On a scheduled flight from Milan to London, Šuker found four ancient Greek gold coins worth 25,000 euros in a storage compartment. Instead of reporting the find, he kept the coins and gave them to a friend from Munich. When she wanted to have the value appraised by a gold dealer, she filed a complaint. The coin specialist had known that the previous owner of the coins was missing his property.
