The Premier League 2000/01 was the ninth season of the Premier League , which was hosted by the FA , and at the same time the 102nd first division season in English football. It began on August 19, 2000 and ended on May 19, 2001. Due to the sponsor Barclays , it was officially named FA Barclaycard Premiership .
Champion was on matchday 33 - 5 game days before the end of the season - Manchester United , which meant the earliest championship in Premier League history. Manchester City , Coventry City and Bradford City had to relegate to the First Division . The top scorer was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink from Chelsea with 23 goals .
