Football League 1890/91

The Football League 1891/92 was the fourth season of the highest English football league . It began on September 5, 1891, ended on April 30, 1892 and was the last season that was still equipped without the addition "First Division".

The AFC Sunderland won with five points ahead of Preston North End for the first time in club history the English Championship. Of the two promoters of the previous year Stoke City and FC Darwen , the club from Darwen had to leave the elite class after only one year and relegate to the Football League Second Division, newly created in 1892 . After the increase from 14 to 16 clubs in the following season , three clubs from the Football Alliance were to be added: Nottingham Forest , Newton Heath and The Wednesday .

A total of 292 players were used, with AFC Sunderland with 15 the fewest and Everton with 26 the most players in league games. 121 newcomers opposed 100 footballers who last came into play in the 1891/92 season. 23 players were able to play all 26 league games of their club.

    The Sunderland AFC championship team

The following list lists all players who played in a league game for Sunderland AFC during the 1891/92 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.

    Election procedure

The rules of the Football League stipulated that the four worst-placed teams had to stand for re-election at the end of the season. Voting took place at the annual general meeting of the Football League, at which new admissions were also decided. The FA Cup winner West Bromwich Albion played a special role in this and did not have to face re-election after winning the cup. The following distribution of votes ensured that, with Nottingham Forest , Newton Heath and The Wednesday, three clubs were promoted to the Football League First Division , which was increased to 16 clubs, with Darwen FC playing in the following season as well as the rejected clubs Sheffield United and Burton Swifts in the newly formed Football League Second Division .
