The Premier League 2019/20 was the 28th season of the Premier League and also the 121st first division season in English football. It opened on August 9, 2019 with Liverpool FC's game against newly promoted Norwich City . After an interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic from March 13, 2020, it was continued from June 17 to July 26.
Changes compared to the 2018/19 season
For the first time there was a winter break in February 2020, whereby the game was never completely interrupted and instead each club was given an individual rest period.
In addition, video referees were used for the first time in this season .
If two or more clubs played for the championship, European competitions or against relegation, the direct comparison was decisive from this season in the event of a tie based on the goal difference and the number of hits.
Season course
Title fight and international competitions
Defending champion was Manchester City . The champions were won on matchday 31 - 7 matchdays before the end of the season - Liverpool FC , which meant the earliest championship in Premier League history (previously Manchester United 2001 and Manchester City 2018 each 5 matchdays before the end of the season). For the Reds it was the 19th English championship and the first since the introduction of the Premier League.
Manchester United managed to qualify for the Champions League again after a season of abstinence in a direct duel with Leicester City . Tottenham Hotspur , the 2019 Champions League finalist, only qualified for the Europa League, while Arsenal FC, after their worst performance this season in 25 years, failed to take a place in Europe for the first time since 1995. The qualification for the Europa League succeeded after the season by winning the cup .
Relegation battle
After the 24th defeat, promoted Norwich City was relegated as the first team with three games left. On the last day of the match, AFC Bournemouth and Watford FC followed , both of which had been part of the league for five years, with Aston Villa being the only competitor for relegation .
Game operations during the COVID-19 pandemic
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FA announced on March 13, 2020 that it would suspend gaming operations until further notice. On June 17, he was resumed with the two catch-up games on match day 28; No spectators are allowed in the stadiums in the Premier League either.
