Burnley is a city in the north of England . Burnley is located in the borough of the same name in the county of Lancashire and lies on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal . The River Calder flows through the city, as does the River Brun , which flows into the River Calder here. The population is about 89,500.
The city was known for its cotton weaving mills and had a busy wool industry in the 13th century. Today the industry includes metal processing and mechanical engineering. In the 19th century the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built through the city, which led to the growth of modern industry. Similar to other industrial cities in northern England, a growing minority of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent live in Burnley, particularly from Pakistan . These immigrants are concentrated in the traditional working class neighborhoods of Stoneyholme and Daneshouse.
In the north of the city is the striking Pendle Hill, which is associated with a former witch cult.
The Delf Hill Stone Circle is on Extwistle Moor east of Burnley.
The musical experimental sculpture Singing Ringing Tree has existed since 2006.
Burnley FC, known throughout England, is playing on Turf Moor as a promoted player in the Premier League 2016/17 .
