Steven Burke (born March 4, 1988 in Burnley ) is a former British track and road cyclist and two-time Olympic champion.

Athletic career

Steven Burke was four times British track cycling champion in the junior class in the scratch , single pursuit and points race in 2003 and 2004 . In 2005 he became the European junior team pursuit champion . At the World Championships in Vienna , he won the silver medal in the same discipline. The following year he defended his European title, and this time he won bronze at the World Cup. In 2007 he became European champion in the team pursuit in the U23 class and he won bronze in the single pursuit. At the national championship he was the British elite scratch champion.

In the 2008/2009 season Burke won the World Cup races in Manchester and Copenhagen in the team pursuit; in the following season, the British team was able to repeat their victory in Manchester. At the Olympic Games in Beijing Burke won the bronze medal in the individual pursuit. At the U23 European Championship he was able to defend his title in the team pursuit. He was also the 2008 British Champion in the Singles Pursuit.

In 2013 Steven Burke became vice world champion in the team pursuit in Minsk , together with Ed Clancy , Sam Harrison and Andrew Tennant .

In 2016, Burke was nominated to take part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he won the gold medal in the team pursuit together with Ed Clancy , Owain Doull and Bradley Wiggins .

In November 2019, Steven Burke announced that he would end his international career. But he will still take part in six-day races and support local track teams.

Honors

Burke was honored with the induction into the Hall of Fame of the European cycling association Union Européenne de Cyclisme .
