Michael Turtur

Michael Colin Turtur AO (born July 2, 1958 in Adelaide ) is an Australian cycling official and former track cyclist . His greatest achievement was winning the gold medal with the Australian four-wheeler at the 1984 Summer Olympics . He has been Race Director of the Tour Down Under since 1998 , was President of the Oceanian Cycling Confederation from 2008 to 2012 and thus a member of the Management Committee of the Union Cycliste Internationale .

In 1978 the Commonwealth Games were Turtur's first major international championships, and in 1980 he took part in the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow. In 1982 and 1983 he took part in the road world championships. At the 1982 Commonwealth Games , Turtur won his first international medals: gold in the team pursuit and the single pursuit , and bronze in the 10-mile scratch . At the Summer Olympics he was with Dean Woods , Kevin Nichols and Michael Grenda after victories over Italy in the semifinals and the United States in the final Olympic champion. Turtur was the Australian flag bearer at the 1986 Commonwealth Games , where he was able to defend his title in the team pursuit.

In 2008, Turtur was named South Australian of the Year .

On December 2, 2012, Turtur was voted out of office as President of the Oceanic Cycling Federation; his successor was Tracey Gaudry . Turtur was accused of a conflict of interest between the Continental Association and his position as race organizer of the Tour Down Under, particularly with regard to the treatment of the Lance Armstrong doping affair .
