UCI Road World Championships 1982

The 1982 UCI Road World Championships took place on September 1st, 4th and 5th on the British Goodwood Circuit .

Racing action

The professionals had 136 riders at the start, of which only 55 reached the finish line after 18 laps of 15.3 kilometers each. World champion was the Italian Giuseppe Saronni . The former world champions Freddy Maertens and Bernard Hinault were among those who left early . Nine West German professionals were at the start, four reached the finish, of which Klaus-Peter Thaler was the best in eighth place.

126 riders started in the amateurs, 118 of whom were able to place, won by GDR rider Bernd Drogan . In the women's race, 69 out of 81 riders crossed the finish line. The best West German was the 15-year-old Sandra Schumacher in fourth place. The team from the Netherlands won the team time trial , the German street four with Thomas Freienstein , Dieter Flögel , Michael Marx and Bernd Oldenburg took ninth place. The Frankfurt cycling journalist Helmer Boelsen reported that the working conditions for his colleagues on site were extremely poor.
