UCI Road World Championships 1971
The 1971 UCI Road World Championships took place on September 4th and 5th in Mendrisio , Switzerland .
The professional's race, which covered a 16.8 kilometer circuit 16 times, began with a minute's silence for the 1970 road world champion Jean-Pierre Monseré , who had an accident in March of the same year . There were 93 drivers at the start, of which 57 made it to the finish. A quartet led by Joop Zoetemelk led the race up to lap 13 , until Eddy Merckx organized the pursuit with five other drivers and finally only Felice Gimondi could keep up. Merckx became world champion for the second time since 1967 .
Only six German drivers were at the start because the German Professional Racing Association (DBRV), which normally financed participation in such competitions, had told the athletes that they would have to pay for their own travel and accommodation. Hennes Junkermann was the only German to cross the finish line and was 38; the remaining five drivers dropped out.
With the amateurs, however, a German rider, Dieter Koslar from Cologne , was able to place himself in fifth place, which the magazine Radsport described as a "hit".
Cycling also praised Anna Konkina , the winner of the women's road race, who had already become world champion last year: “ She is not only the fastest, but also one of the prettiest. They gladly forgive her for being late for the awards ceremony. She still had to make herself 'fine'. After all, femininity should not be neglected at a cycling world championship. "
