1988 UCI Road World Championships
The 55th UCI Road World Championships 1988 were held in August 28 Belgian Ronse instead. With the exception of the women's team time trial, the results of the road cycling competitions at the 1988 Seoul Olympics were also counted towards the world championship.
Racing action
The professional drivers had to tackle a 13.57-kilometer circuit 20 times. In the 16th lap a breakaway group formed, in which the German Rolf Gölz also rode. One lap later, this and three other drivers managed to break away from the group. In the third to last lap, however, the four were caught up again and a new group of 14 drivers formed, who stayed together until the last lap. Before the finish line, the Belgian Claude Criquielion , the Italian Maurizio Fondriest and the Canadian Steve Bauer broke up and started the final sprint. The Belgian and Canadian clashed and Criquielion fell. The beneficiary was Maurizio Fondriest, who was the first to cross the finish line. Bauer was then disqualified, and Criquielion, frustrated, pushed his machine over the line in eleventh place. There was tumult among the disappointed Belgian spectators. The German Hartmut Bölts just missed the podium with fourth place. Rolf Gölz, one of the favorites before the race and one of the most active in the field afterwards, had to be content with a disappointing 68th place in the end, even behind his compatriot Andreas Kappes , who came in 50th. The remaining five German drivers were among the 99 eliminated.
