The podium of the individual time trial with Bradley Wiggins , Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara (from left)

Date: September 21, 2011
Length: 46.4 km (two laps of 23.2 km)

The men's elite individual time trial took place on September 21, 2011. It was held on a 23.2 kilometer circuit on which two laps had to be completed. This corresponded to a total distance of 46.4 kilometers. A total of 65 drivers from 38 nations were registered for the race, of which 64 started and 62 reached the finish.

As the third German ever and for the fourth time after Jan Ullrich in 1999 and 2001 and Bert Grabsch in 2008 , the 26-year-old Tony Martin from Cottbus secured the world title in the individual time trial. In the end, he was 1:15 minutes ahead of second-placed Brit Bradley Wiggins and 1:20 minutes ahead of defending champion Fabian Cancellara from Switzerland. In 2009 and 2010 Martin won the bronze medal.

The German Tony Martin won his first world title in Copenhagen

Martin, who took to the track as the penultimate starter, was in the lead in all interim measurements right from the start and continuously expanded his lead over the last defending champion Fabian Cancellara, who had long held second place. A few meters from the finish he made a mistake in a right-hand bend, which meant that he lost silver to Bradley Wiggins, who did not suffer as much in terms of performance at the end of the race. On the track, Tony Martin caught up with both Briton David Millar , who started 90 seconds ahead of him, and Mikhail Ignatiev from Russia who started 180 seconds ahead of him . After Taylor Phinney from the United States, who had driven off the starting ramp four and a half minutes earlier , the eventual world champion was still 38 seconds behind the track.

Bert Grabsch rounded off the good overall German result with fourth place. The British with positions 2 and 7 and the Australians in positions 5 and 6 also achieved good results. The second starter from Switzerland, Martin Kohler , took 40th place. There was no participant from Austria.
