Michael Albasini (born December 20, 1980 ) is a Swiss cyclist . During his career he won the overall ranking of shorter stage races as well as individual stages and one-day races , especially in the sprint .
Career
Michael Albasini won the Swiss championship on the road and in the mountains as a junior in 1998. In 2001 and 2002 he drove as a stagiaire for the Italian team Fassa Bortolo and finished fourth for this team in 2001 at the Ster Elektrotoer . In 2002 he became European champion in the U23 category.
In 2003 he started his professional career with the Phonak Cycling Team . His most significant placement in his two years at Phonak was a fifth place in the 2004 championship in Zurich .
In 2005 Albasini moved to the Italian team Liquigas , with which he stayed until 2008. At the Tour de Suisse 2005 he won the sprint of a seven-man breakaway group on the fifth stage from Zurzach to Altdorf , thus winning his first ProTour competition in his career. This year he received a six-week doping ban and a fine of 2,000 Swiss francs from the Swiss Cycling Association for violating the reporting obligation .
In the following years, Albasini achieved several stage victories in competitions of the UCI WorldTour and the previous series UCI ProTour as a member of the cycling teams HTC-Highroad and Orica GreenEdge : He won two more stages of the Tour de Suisse ( 2009 ) and 2012 , a stage of the Basque Country Tour 2009 , a stage of the Vuelta a España 2011 , a stage near Paris – Nice 2013 and a total of seven stages of the Tour de Romandie , including three stages in 2014 . His most significant success to date came when he won the overall ranking of the Tour of Catalonia in 2012 and won two stages of the day - once as a soloist, once in the sprint of the front field.
In addition, Albasini won the overall ratings of the Tour of Austria 2009 , Tour of Britain 2010 and Tour des Fjords 2018. In 2011 and 2013 he won the Grand Prix of Canton Aargau , the Italian semi-classic Tre Valli Varesine 2014 and Coppa Agostoni 2017.
Racism allegation
Albasini is said to have insulted the dark-skinned rider Kévin Réza at the Tour de France 2014 as a "dirty negro". Albasini's team management announced that both drivers had spoken out and "cleared up the misunderstanding".
