Jakob Fuglsang (born March 22, 1985 in Geneva ) is a Danish cyclist .

Career

Jakob Fuglsang initially devoted himself to mountain bike races at the beginning of his career . At the Mountain Bike World Championships in Rotorua in 2005 , he was fifth in the U23 cross country race . He won this competition at the 2007 Mountain Bike World Championships in Fort William . He was also the Danish champion in cross country in 2006 and in the mountain bike marathon in 2008 .

After Fuglsang had ridden on the road at the end of 2008 as a stagiaire for the CSC-Saxo Bank team , for which he won the tour of his home country in 2008, he concentrated entirely on road cycling from 2009 onwards. He remained a regular member of this UCI ProTeam from 2009 until the end of the 2010 season , before moving to RadioShack-Nissan in 2011 . In 2009 and 2010 he won the Tour of Denmark several times .

Fuglsang won the overall ranking of the Tour of Luxembourg in 2012 and was then third overall in the Tour de Suisse . He then became the Danish time trial champion . Despite these results, his team did not nominate him for the 2012 Tour de France and instead contested the Tour of Austria , in which he won the overall standings and a stage.

In 2013 Fuglsang switched to the Astana Pro Team and was seventh overall in the Tour de France 2013 in his first year there . At the 2016 Olympics , he won the silver medal in road racing and was beaten by Greg Van Avermaet in the sprint of a three-man leading group .

In 2017 Fuglsang won the overall ranking of the Critérium du Dauphiné , and he also won two stages on this tour. The Tour de France 2017 had Fuglsang injury after the 13th stage up. During the 11th stage of the tour, he suffered two fractures in his left arm in a fall.

In the 2019 season, Fuglsang was successful in the spring classics: He finished third in the Amstel Gold Race after being caught up with his escape companion Julian Alaphilippe due to a disagreement shortly before the finish. Alaphilippe then beat him in a sprint on the finish slope of the subsequent Fleche Wallone . Finally he won at Liège – Bastogne – Liège after a solo trip over the last few kilometers. After he also won the overall ranking of the Critérium du Dauphiné, he was considered one of the favorites for the Tour de France 2019 , but had to give up the tour on the 16th stage after a fall with severe bruises.

In February 2020, with reference to a report by the Cycling Antidoping Foundation (CADF) that was made public through indiscretions, Fuglsang was accused of maintaining illegal contacts with the medical doctor Michele Ferrari, who had been banned from the sports field for doping , which was punished with a ban of one to two years would. The CADF announced shortly thereafter that there was insufficient evidence to initiate disciplinary proceedings.
