Josef "Sepp" Fuchs (born July 24, 1948 in Einsiedeln ) is a former Swiss cyclist . He was one of the most successful cyclists in Switzerland in the 1970s.

Josef Fuchs started cycling as an amateur in 1968 and as a professional from 1971 to 1981. In 1969 he was in the streets World Championships in Brno third in the team time trial of the amateurs, together with Walter Bürki , Bruno Hubschmid and Xaver Kurmann , and at the World Cup 1971 runners-up in the individual pursuit on the track . In 1972 and 1973 he was Swiss road champion.

In his professional time, Fuchs mainly drove for Italian teams and acted as a " noble helper " for prominent drivers such as Luis Ocaña Pernía , Francesco Moser and Giuseppe Saronni , but was also always able to place himself at the front. In 1981 he won Liège – Bastogne – Liège . He achieved further victories in 1971 at the Giro del Mendrisiotto , 1972 at the Giro di Toscana and 1981 at the Grand Prix di Lugano . He started ten times at Grand Tours. At the Tour de France in 1975 , he finished eighth overall; at the Giro d'Italia in 1979 he finished eighth in the overall ranking as well as in 1980 , and in 1981 he was fifth. In 1978 he was third in the Tour de Suisse , in 1980 and 1981 second.

As a counterbalance to cycling, Fuchs also went cross-country skiing and was ninth in the Swiss championship in 1970. Later he also took part in " Ironman " competitions, ran marathons and rode mountain bike races.

After retiring from active cycling, Fuchs opened a bicycle shop in Zurich that existed until 2009. He also worked with frame builder Pietro del Po .

Honors

In 1969 Josef Fuchs was voted Swiss Team of the Year together with Burki, Hubschmid and Kurmann after their third place at the Road World Championships .
