Niki Aebersold began his professional career in 1996 with the PMU Romand-Bepsa team, which only existed for one year . In 1997 and 1998 he drove for the Post Swiss team . There he was able to celebrate his first successes and in 1998 became Swiss champion in road racing . In 1999 he signed a contract with the Dutch team Rabobank . In 2000 he took part in the three-week tour of Italy for the first time and turned 68.
From 2001 to 2003 Aebersold drove for the German team Coast , to which Jan Ullrich also moved in 2003 . When the team could no longer pay the riders' salaries and was therefore banned from the World Cycling Federation , Aebersold took the opportunity and moved back to Switzerland to Team Phonak with Alex Zülle . With this team he drove again in 2004 on the Tour of Italy. In July of the same year he won a stage in the Tour de Suisse . In 2005 he ended his career at the age of 33.
