Martin Elmiger (born September 23, 1978 in Hagendorn ) is a former Swiss cyclist and four-time Swiss champion. He is considered an all-rounder with sprinting qualities and a good helper .

Career

Elmiger started cycling in 1992 at his hometown club RMV Cham-Hagendorn . After taking eleventh place in the U23 road race at the road world championships in 2000 , he became a professional with the Post Swiss team in 2001 . Elmiger achieved his first major victory in 2001 when he won the Swiss championships.

After the Post Swiss team was dissolved , Elmiger signed with the later UCI ProTeam Phonak in 2002 and achieved his first international success at the Circuito de Getxo . In the 2003 season Elmiger won the GP Canton Aargau in Gippingen in his home country and was 13th in the elite race of the 2002 World Championships . In 2004, the Tour de France was his first Grand Tour , which he finished in 108th place. Then he took part in the Olympic Games for his country .

After the Phonak team split up , Elminger switched to the French team Ag2r La Mondiale in 2007 . On his first assignment for the new employer, he celebrated one of the greatest successes of his career by winning the Tour Down Under in Australia - just three seconds ahead of runner-up Karl Menzies . In September he won the Grand Prix d'Isbergues . In the subsequent road world championship he was tenth. Another major success he achieved in 2010 with the overall victory at the Four Days of Dunkirk . Decisive for this was the solo victory on the fourth part of the day. At the Swiss Championships, he won bronze in the time trial and his third championship title in road racing.

In 2013 he moved to the Swiss team IAM Cycling and won his fourth national road race title that same year. After four years at IAM, he switched to BMC Cycling for a year with the aim of taking part in the Tour de Suisse 2017 , the start weekend of which was organized by his home club RMV Cham-Hagendorn and a stage circuit through his place of residence. At the age of eleven he had contested his first race on the same track. Next to Albert Zweifel he is the cyclist with the most participations (16) in the Tour de Suisse. At the end of the 2017 season he ended his active cycling career.
