René Strehler (born April 13, 1934 in Affoltern am Albis ) is a former Swiss cyclist .

Athletic career

René Strehler, who began cycling in 1950, was one of the most successful and versatile racing cyclists in Switzerland from the mid-1950s to the 1960s, after the era of the two Swiss cycling stars Hugo Koblet and Ferdy Kübler . As an amateur, René Strehler became Swiss champion five times: in 1952 in the team pursuit on the track (with Edi Vontobel , Georges Frei and Peter Tiefenthaler from the Seebach / Zurich cycling club ), in 1953 in road races, and in 1953 and 1954 in the single pursuit and team time trial his team, of which he was also the captain. In 1955 he became a professional and won the Swiss Championship in pursuit as such. He also took second place in this discipline at the World Track Championships in Milan and won the Tour de Romandie .

Strehler became national champion in pursuit twice - in 1956 and 1957 - and in 1960 he also won the national title in the professional road race. In 1960 he finished third in the Tour de Suisse and won Bern-Geneva and the Tour of Northern Switzerland . At the UCI track world championships in 1955, he was second in the single pursuit of professional drivers behind Guido Messina . In 1960 he was at the start of the Tour de France and finished the tour in 37th place.

René Strehler also set world records on the track several times: On September 8, 1956, he drove five kilometers on the Vigorelli track in 6:08, 80 minutes. (Record for open lanes ). On December 18, 1955, he drove the five kilometers in the Hallenstadion in Zurich in 6:14 minutes. and in August 1956 in 6: 09.40 min.
