The Velodromo Maspes-Vigorelli in 2014

The Velodromo Maspes-Vigorelli (generally Vigorelli-Bahn, Italian called "Il Vigorelli" ) is a cycling track in Milan (Italy).

The Vigorelli-Bahn is an "open-air run", which means that apart from the grandstand roof there is no hall or closed roof. The 397.27 meter long track was built by the Münster architect Clemens Schürmann . It was originally located in the Stadio Nazionale del PNF in Rome, where the 1932 World Championships were held. Three years later the railway, called "Pista magica", was set up in Milan and reopened there on October 28, 1935. In the autumn of 1943, the cycling track was completely destroyed in an air raid, but rebuilt after the war. On the occasion of the UCI rail world championships in 1962, the runway was modernized again and the surface was smoothed using a new process.

A total of nine world records over “the hour” , which are still recognized today, were set there - by Giuseppe Olmo , Fausto Coppi , Ercole Baldini, Roger Rivière and Jacques Anquetil , among others . In total, more than 150 world records were achieved on the track in various disciplines of track cycling . It was there that Jan Derksen and Antonio Maspes set their standing attempt world record in 1955, which lasted 32 minutes and 20 seconds. To date (2016) nine of these records still exist.

The manufacture of the world-famous Italian frame builder Masi is still located below the Vigorelli railway . Eddy Merckx rode on this brand as a member of the FAEMA cycling team in the 1960s .

The Velodromo Vigorelli , originally named after one of the builders, the industrialist Giuseppe Vigorelli, was given its current official double name on October 19, 2000 in honor of the late Milanese professional cyclist Antonio Maspes . Antonio Maspes won the Milan Grand Prix for sprinters four times. The German Alwin Vater won this competition for the first time in 1894 . The last winner of a Grand Prix event in 1987 was Michael Hübner, also a German sprinter.

In April 2016 it was announced that the lift, after having been closed for 15 years, will be operational again on June 12, 2016. In the meantime it has been renovated for six million euros. There is space for 7,400 spectators in the stands. In the interior there is a football field, which is still used as such.

In June 1965 the Beatles played one of their three concerts in Italy at this location. The last sporting ambition of the stadium before the reopening was the home games of the local American football team.
