The UCI Track Cycling World Championships ( English UCI Track Cycling World Championships ) held annually since 1,893th Since they are held today by the world cycling association UCI in the various disciplines of track cycling , they have this name, and names such as track cycling world championships (or track cycling world championships ), track cycling world championships or track world championships are also common . The world championships from 1893 to 1899 were organized by predecessor organizations of the UCI.

history

The first track world championships in Chicago in 1893 were held for amateurs in two disciplines: the American Arthur Augustus Zimmerman won the sprint, the South African Laurens Smitz Meintjes won the 62-mile race behind multi-seat pacemaker guidance (without motor). The first German world champion was August Lehr in 1894 in Antwerp in the sprint.

The first competitions for professionals took place in Cologne in 1895 , which were also the first rail world championships in Germany. Initially, only the sprint and the 100 km stand -up race were on the program. The UCI was founded in Paris on April 14, 1900 and has since been responsible for organizing the world championships. In 1946 the individual pursuit and in 1962 the team pursuit was added. In 1966, the time trial over 1000 meters and a tandem sprint were introduced. A points race and the Keirin Sprint followed in 1980.

In the 1990s, the UCI World Cycling Association fundamentally redesigned the track world championships program: In 1992, the separation between professional and amateur world championships was abolished, which means that the track world championships have been held as "open" championships ever since. Three years later, the tandem and standing disciplines were abolished, but the two-man team driving and the team sprint were added to the program. Since 2002 there have also been competitions in scratch and since 2007 there has been an all-around title ( Omnium ). It now consists of the individual disciplines scratch, elimination race and the final points race.

Since 1975 separate world championships for juniors and since 1995 Masters track world championships for older athletes have been held. Up to and including 1995, the track and road world championships in the same country were held consecutively, sometimes in connection with the world championships in indoor cycling. The world championships have been awarded to various national associations since 1996, the world rail championships take place in spring and the world road championships in autumn. In addition, so-called B-World Championships were held from 1997 to 2003 , in which athletes from countries took part in which the level of performance in cycling is still developing. Since then, the continental championships have taken on this task.

  2. The UCI only took over the organization for the track cycling world championships in its founding year 1900 . The previous world championships were under the supervision of the International Cyclists' Association (ICA), the UCI's predecessor organization.
  3. The flying races (sprint) took place in Rome, the standing races in Berlin, as the track in Rome was not suitable for it.
  4. Cities applied and the UCI awarded the professional driver world championship to Berlin and the amateur world championship to Leipzig.
  5. As in 1908, the UCI awarded competitions to both cities.
  6. The World Cup in Liverpool could not be completed due to persistent rain. The rest of the event took place in Paris.
  7. The last races could only be held on August 20th due to heavy rain.
  8. This year, a standing world championship for amateurs only was held from August 5th to 10th in Leipzig on the Alfred Rosch arena . The results are not included in official lists.
