UCI track world championships 1926

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 22nd UCI Track World Championships took place from July 24th to August 1st, 1926 in Milan and Turin . The flying competitions were held on the 364 meter long “Simplonbahn” in Milan, the standing races on the 400 meter long “Moto-Velodrom Appio” in Turin.

17 drivers from eight nations entered the professional aviation races and 40 drivers from twelve nations entered the amateur races. The heats were so hot that the races had to be postponed to 9 p.m. in the evening. The illustrated cycling sport also criticized the “chauvinism and partiality” of the Italian referees ". The reporter on site was convinced that the early departure of the German riders was due to this partiality, even though the representative of the Bund Deutscher cyclists , Henry Stevens , "go to Sunday Mass in Milan Cathedral and fervently a German success" prayed and "the Milan passages on the ox of the mosaic floor" had entered, "what good luck is well known, but to no avail."

But the behavior of the drivers was also criticized: Moeskops waved a dirty towel instead of a Dutch flag at the welcome round of the nations. When the Dutch delegate tried to snatch the towel from him, he received boxing lashes from Moeskops. And Klaas van Nek wanted to attack a German delegate he didn't like. Conclusion: "There has never been so much criticism at any World Cup as this time in Italy!"
