UCI Track World Championships 1982

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 72nd UCI Track World Championships took place from 23 to 29 August 1982 on the velodrome of the "Saffron Lane Sports Center" in Leicester , UK .

The cycling track was 333 meters long, the surface was made of wood. Around 32,000 spectators came over the seven days of the competition; the British audience was “enthusiastic” and “very fair”. However, the changing weather affected the competitions; Due to rain, it had to be interrupted more often, on one day the program even had to be canceled completely and postponed to the next day.

The magazine Radsport was pleased with the headline: “Seven medals as a result! BDR team back at the top of the world ”, the German team won gold once, silver four times and bronze twice. The magazine praised the new German coaching duo of Dieter Berkmann and Udo Hempel .

The Canadian Gordon Singleton caused a lot of excitement : He became world champion in the Keirin , although three protests had been raised against him. In the last lap he “pulled away” from the German Josef Kristen , who ended up only fourth. In any case, cycling was not really happy about this discipline, which has only been held since 1980: "Nevertheless, like scoring, it belongs more to the entertainment division than the classic world championship discipline." It was also Singleton who, according to cycling, “let himself down” in the third final run of the professional sprinters when he saw that he had no chance against Nakano: “Nakano finally became world champion for the sixth time and Singleton also put off the last Fan, when he did not want to stand on the podium with Nakano at the award ceremony.
