Tandem race

Rail tandem

The tandem race is a discipline of track cycling .

The tandem race is basically the sprint discipline , but this is carried out by two drivers on a two-seater tandem . The man in front is the helmsman, while the driver sitting behind has almost no view to the front and has to fully rely on his partner. Very high speeds (up to 80 km / h) are reached on a tandem.

From 1908 to 1972 the tandem race was part of the program at the Olympic Games . In 1995 the discipline was also deleted from the world championship program and has since been almost forgotten. The tendency towards shorter and shorter cycling tracks makes this discipline difficult, as there is too much pressure on the corners in the tight corners of the shorter tracks.

Nowadays, however, there are still tandem races in "para-cycling" in disabled cycling. Here the visually impaired or blind driver sits in the back and is controlled by a "pilot". These races (sprint, pursuit, time trial) are also held in the UCI Para Cycling competitions and are also Paralympic disciplines.
