UCI track world championships 1983

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 73rd UCI Track World Championships took place from 23 to 28 August 1983 on the Zurich-Oerlikon Open Track .

On the occasion of this World Cup, the “venerable” Zurich cycling track was renovated again, equipped with floodlights and new seating and standing areas.

In the women’s category, there were only 21 drivers in total . Some well-known drivers, such as Sheila Young or Sue Novara , had resigned. Not a single track athlete had traveled from the Eastern European countries, which surprised cycling : "Women cycling was once a World Cup discipline on the Soviet initiative." The reasons for this could only be speculated as to whether the reason for this abstinence was that women cycling was not an Olympic discipline, and the "Eastern Bloc countries" concentrated on these disciplines, or whether stricter doping controls were avoided.

The team of the Association of German Cyclists caused a doping scandal: the tandem drivers Fredy Schmidtke and Dieter Giebken and the sprinter Claudia Lommatzsch tested positive for ephedrine . The three athletes were stripped of their medals and they were banned for a month. However, this decision was revised in November of the same year by the World Cycling Federation Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). Lommatzsch, however, had already announced her immediate retirement from cycling because of these events.
