Michael Marcussen (also Markussen ) (born January 9, 1955 in Roskilde ) is a former Danish cyclist .

Athletic career

In 1972 Michael Marcussen became Danish youth champion in team time trial , the following year Danish junior champion in team pursuit on the track and second in single pursuit . After taking several podium places at the Danish championships in 1980, he was third in the points race at the UCI track world championships in Brno in 1981 and the following year, at the track world championship in Leicester , he was runner-up in this discipline. In total, in the course of his career he was also the Danish amateur champion six times in various disciplines of track cycling.

In 1983 Marcussen was world champion in the points race at the UCI track world championships in 1983 in Zurich . In 1984 he became a professional and as such took third place in the points race at the track world championships in Ghent in 1988 and became vice world champion in Maebashi in 1990 .

Michael Marcussen was also able to achieve success on the road: He won a stage each in the Lower Saxony Tour (1977), the Tour of Britain (1978) and the Tour of Ireland (1979). In 1981 he became national amateur champion in the individual time trial and in 1983 road champion.

Michael Marcussen competed at the Olympic Games twice - in 1980 and 1984 . His best finish was a fifth place in the team pursuit at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles , along with Dan Frost , Jørgen Pedersen and Brian Holm . He also started in 36 six-day races ; In 1989 he won the Perth team with Kim Eriksen .

After the 1984 Games, Marcussen joined the professional drivers. In 1988 he won bronze in the points race at the World Railroad Championships , in 1990 silver. He then ended his cycling career.

Honors

In 1981 and 1983 Marcussen was voted “Cyclist of the Year” in Denmark. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he was the flag bearer of the Danish team.
