Šaca (Hungarian Saca ) is a district of Košice , in Okres Košice II in eastern Slovakia about 15 kilometers southwest of the city center.

The current district was planned as a socialist city in Slovakia and was an independent municipality until 1968. As in other Eastern European countries, an industrial city was to be built, which in this case, according to the plans of the party leadership, would play a major role for the armaments industry. However, only a small part of the plans were implemented. In addition to Šaca, Nová Ostrava , today's Poruba district of the north-east Moravian city of Ostrava (German "(Moravian) Ostrau") must be mentioned as a socialist city in Czechoslovakia .

history

The original place was mentioned for the first time in 1275, since 1427 the place was under the rule of the Semseys , who also built a castle in the place in the 15th century. However, this was razed during the reign of Matthias Corvinus , in the subsequent period the place remained agricultural and there were water mills in the place until the 1950s .

After the Second World War it began to develop into an industrial center, and in January 1960 the Východoslovenské železiarne Košice (VSŽ Košice - "East Slovak Steelworks in Košice") began building a steel mill on more than 800 hectares of land. After the first furnace went into operation in 1965, the place was strongly influenced by this branch of industry and the aforementioned prefabricated buildings were gradually built. After the turnaround, the plant had to adapt to the new market situation and on November 24, 2000 it was bought by the American steel group United States Steel Corporation and renamed US Steel Košice . Since 1968 the place is also a part of Košice .
