Luník IX is a district southwest of downtown Košice in Okres Košice II in eastern Slovakia .
history
The housing estate was built from 1981 to 1989 as a satellite town . Since 1990 it has been an independent part of Košice.
Social problems
Luník IX is regarded as a textbook example of the ghettoization of Roma in East Central Europe . At the end of the 1980s the Roma from Košice were resettled to Luník IX. Members of the middle class left the housing estate shortly and it developed into a poverty ghetto. In Luník IX, hepatitis , head lice , diarrhea , scabies and meningitis are common. The unemployment rate is almost 100%.

The bus line 11 (Námestie osloboditeľov – Luník IX) of the municipal transport company Dopravný podnik mesta Košice (DPMK) has an hourly to half-hourly stop with a turning loop at the entrance of the settlement. At this stop, entry and exit is only possible through the front door in order to avoid black journeys and the boarding of unauthorized persons. For the same reason, a second bus stop (Luník IX, rázcestie), which is even further outside the settlement, is now only used during school hours. The bus drivers who are deployed on this route also receive a hazard allowance, which is justified with frequent attacks by aggressive passengers.
