Nil is a brand of Austria Tobacco (formerly Österreichische Tabakregie ) belonging to Japan Tobacco . It is one of the oldest cigarette brands left on the Austrian and German markets.

history

The Nil brand cigarettes have been produced as so-called oriental cigarettes since 1901 and were particularly popular among artists. For example, Otto Dix Nil smoked . Like most Oriental cigarettes, they contained hemp (8%) until the late 1920s. In addition to the classic, filterless Nile with the characteristic oval cross-section, a filter version of the cigarette came onto the market in 1957, which was available until 1976. Since 1998 the brand has been realigned by Austria Tabak and again strongly advertised. A light brand and a fine-cut tobacco were soon added to the restored filter cigarettes . When the new product was launched, it was stated that NIL was the oldest brand still in production on the German market, although there were and still are older brands. NIL is currently available as NIL (blue, medium strength) and NIL white (lights). Nil-Feinschnitt can only be bought in Austria, its distribution in Germany was terminated after a short time. The production of the classic, filterless Nile from pure oriental tobacco was discontinued at the turn of the year 2003/2004 due to new European-wide restrictions on tar and nicotine levels. At the beginning of 2011, the NIL brand was announced in Austria. In Germany, Nil blue and white are still available.

The logo of the NIL cigarettes consists of a blue rectangle in which the lettering NIL is set in white capital letters, crowned by an also white eagle with the company name REGIE, which refers to the former tobacco directorate .

Limited editions

For the 100th birthday in 2001, a special edition of the brand with black and white photos by Austrian and German artists appeared on the back of the box. These included Otto Sander , Fiona Bennett , Ugo Dossi , Steffen Wink, Pfister siblings and Peter Patzak.

In the summer of 2007 there was the so-called NIL home edition. Based on the cigarette name Nil, five important rivers were selected and applied instead of the distinctive Nil lettering. The following rivers were selected: Danube, Elbe, Isar, Rhine and Spree.
