Japan Tobacco Inc. ( Japanese 日本 た ば こ 産業 株式会社 , Nihon Tabako Sangyō Kabushiki-gaisha ) is an international Japanese tobacco , food and pharmaceutical company . The Tokyo- based group of companies, which is listed in the Nikkei 225 , employs a total of almost 51,000 people. In fiscal 2014, Japan Tobacco generated sales of 23.003 billion US dollars . The actual main activity of the group is the tobacco business. Japan Tobacco is the world's third largest cigarette manufacturer, the international tobacco business from the Switzerland -based subsidiary JT International SA is executed. The four main brands include Winston , Mevius, American Spirit and Camel .

Japan Tobacco Inc. was founded in 1985, but its roots go back to the tobacco monopoly established in Japan in 1898 and administered by the Ministry of Finance . This resulted in the 1949 Nippon Sembai Kōsha ( 日本 専 売 engl, English Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corp. ). In 1977 the Mild Seven brand was introduced. After Japan Tobacco Inc. was founded, the company was partially privatized. The Japanese Ministry of Finance still holds a 33.4% stake in Japan Tobacco (as of March 2013).

In 1999 Japan Tobacco took over the non-US tobacco activities of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company with Geneva- based RJ Reynolds Tobacco International SA . JT International SA , founded in the same year, emerged from this. The Group's entire international tobacco business outside of Japan was brought together in this. In April 2007 Japan Tobacco took over the British Gallaher Group . In September 2015, Japan Tobacco announced the purchase of the brand Natural American Spirit and the associated international sales companies outside the United States at a cost of 5 billion US dollars of Reynolds American Inc. In the same year was Japan Tobacco is known to run out of drinks production. Japan Tobacco has been producing beverages with JT Beverage Products since 1988.
