American Spirit is a cigarette brand owned by the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company that was acquired by the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company in 2002 . It is currently available in the United States , Canada , France , Spain , Italy, the Netherlands , Germany , Switzerland , Austria , Japan and Australia, and the United Kingdom . In September 2015, Reynolds American Inc. announced the sale of the Natural American Spirit brand and the associated international sales companies outside the USA for a price of US $ 5 billion to Japan Tobacco Inc. , in Germany the tobacco will be sold by the True Spirit Tobacco Company Germany (formerly Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company Germany).
The Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company was founded in 1982 in Santa Fe, New Mexico , to bring a type of cigarette onto the market whose tobacco should be free of tobacco additives (with the exception of water).
Because some customers erroneously assumed that cigarettes without additives were less harmful or addictive, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of the United States has ordered the phrase "no additives in our tobacco does NOT mean a safer cigarette" in addition to the existing warnings. "No additives in our cigarettes does NOT mean that it is a safer cigarette".). For the same reason, with the tobacco directive TPD2, the EU will ban the use of terms such as “natural” or “organic” on packaging. In addition, the sentence “Tobacco smoke contains over 70 substances that have been proven to be carcinogenic” must be printed on the pack of all cigarette brands.

American Spirit blue, green, yellow and orange contain the same tobacco, the tar and nicotine values only vary due to different filters, amounts of tobacco and papers.

The Perique tobacco cigarettes consist of 10% of this, the remaining 90% is normal tobacco, also used in the other types. They were taken out of the range in Germany.

The organic tobacco cigarettes contain organically grown tobacco and a biodegradable paper filter. They have since been taken out of the program in Germany.

Stuffing tobacco
For the stuffing tobacco, the same tobacco is used that is also used for the corresponding cigarettes and rolling tobacco, but cut wider so that it can be stuffed better.

The organic blend stuffing tobacco has now been taken out of the range in Germany.
Additives
The German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) lists various chemical additives (catalysts, humectants, burn-off agents, dyes, solvents, etc.) in its database. However, this information does not relate to the tobacco, which only contains water as an additive, but to the cigarette paper and filter material used for the finished cigarettes.
