Camel ( Engl. , Camel ') is a brand of cigarette company RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company , today Reynolds American . The logo known as the camel camel shows a dromedary from the camel family.

history

Richard Joshua Reynolds, known as RJ, founded the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company as early as 1875. In 1883 110 people were employed and in 1886 he produced almost 100 different brands, mainly snuff and chewing tobacco . At the beginning of the 20th century there was a constant change to smoking tobacco. The popular pipe tobacco "Prince Albert" was the first mixture of Virginia, Burley and Oriental tobacco and thus the prototype of the American blend .

Although he thought little of the "new fashion" cigarettes - at that time "Fatima" by Ligget & Myers was the leading brand - the Reynolds product was born in 1913 with the first American blend cigarette "Camel", which made the success of the Company secured for decades. Reynolds took second place among the most successful tobacco companies, ahead of Philip Morris International , behind American Tobacco (with their Lucky Strike , which they created three years later ) . The world-famous advertising slogan “I'd walk a mile for a camel” was created back in 1921.

Camel was the first brand in 1913 to be sold in packs of 20 instead of the 5 or 10 packs that were common at the time; this was adopted by most other brands within a short period of time. The cigarette was heavily promoted from the start, especially because of its mildness, which allows many cigarettes to be smoked. Within a short time Camel achieved a market share of 40% in the USA . John Wayne served as a testimonial in the Camel advertisement . Since August 27, 1968, the Cologne cigarette factory Haus Neuerburg KG offered the Camel for the first time on the German market and then throughout Europe. In this way the unprofitable high tobacco duty could be avoided.

Camel has been a trademark of Japan Tobacco International outside the United States since the early 1990s . The tobacco blend of the non-American Camel contains less oriental tobacco and a higher proportion of Burley.

In January 2017 it was announced that the British tobacco company British American Tobacco is buying up the remains of its US competitor Reynolds, including the Camel brand. The purchase price is around $ 50 billion.
