Otto Sander (born June 30, 1941 in Hanover ; † September 12, 2013 in Berlin ) was a German actor , dubbing and radio play speaker .

Life

Training and work at the theater

Otto Sander was born in Hanover as the son of a naval officer (flotilla engineer) and grew up in Peine and Kassel . Sander's father held a leading position in the old staple fiber , which later became the Enka company in the Kassel district of Bettenhausen . Otto Sander passed his Abitur at the Friedrichsgymnasium in Kassel in 1961 and then completed his military service in the German Navy in 1961/62 , which he left as an ensign at sea in the reserve . With the original goal of becoming a director , Sander studied theater studies , German literature , literature , art history and philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1962 to 1967 . In 1964 he switched to the Otto Falckenberg School to take acting lessons. In 1965, however, he was expelled from school and completed his training there with an external final examination.

Sander received his first engagement at the Kammerspiele in Düsseldorf , where he made his debut in 1965. In 1967/68 he was engaged at the theater of the city of Heidelberg before he was appointed to the Freie Volksbühne Berlin in 1968 by Claus Peymann . Then Peter Stein brought him to the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer , founded in 1970 , where he worked with Klaus Michael Grüber , Wilfried Minks and Luc Bondy , among others . From 1980 Sander appeared on various stages in Berlin, including 1981 at the Schillertheater , 1985 at the Freie Volksbühne and 1989 at the Komödie am Kurfürstendamm . In 2000 and 2001 Otto Sander played Death in Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Jedermann at the Salzburg Festival . After that, Sander could be seen in 2004 as Captain von Köpenick at the Schauspielhaus Bochum .

In addition to his work as an actor, Sander also worked as a director and produced his productions, some of which were created in cooperation with other directors such as Wolf Redl and Peter Fitz , at the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer (1975, 1977, 1982 and 1983) and on Schauspielhaus Zürich (1984/85).

In 2006, Sander fell ill with cancer for the first time . After overcoming this, Sander returned to the theater stage in October 2007. He played the last volume by Samuel Beckett in the Renaissance Theater in Berlin and appeared in Bochum in the play Der Ignorant und der Wahnsinnige by Thomas Bernhard .

Movie and TV

Sander made his film debut in the role of a farmer's son in Roland Klick's short film Ludwig in 1964 . This was followed by other productions for film and television, for example Sander can be seen in Éric Rohmer's Die Marquise von O. in 1976 and in Die Blechtrommel by Volker Schlöndorff in 1979 . His best-known film roles include that of Angel Cassiel in Der Himmel über Berlin by Wim Wenders (where he played alongside his former stage colleague Bruno Ganz ) and that of U-boat commander Kapitänleutnant Philipp Thomsen in Das Boot by Wolfgang Petersen .

Thanks to his warm, powerful voice, which earned him the nickname The Voice , Sander was used very often as a speaker for television documentaries, audio books and radio plays, as well as a voice actor . He voiced Dustin Hoffman (Death of a Salesman) and Ian McKellen (Richard III) , spoke the commentary in the Oscar-winning Arthur Cohn production A Day in September and was the narrator in the films Perfume - The story of a murderer , Krabat and some Werner films. His readings of the essays by Michel de Montaigne are impressive .

In the film Der Einstein des Sex (1999) by Rosa von Praunheim he plays with his wife Monika Hansen and his stepchildren Meret Becker and Ben Becker .

Private

Sander had been married to actress Monika Hansen since 1971 and was the stepfather of Ben and Meret Becker . He had two brothers and a sister. In 2007, Sander's esophageal cancer became known. In 2011 (or in autumn 2012) he was initially considered recovered, but died on September 12, 2013 in Berlin. On September 28th he was buried in the Dorotheenstadt cemetery . His voice can still be heard every evening as a greeting in the bar every reason in Berlin.

social commitment

In 2004 he became involved as an ambassador (called " Bootschafter" ) for the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS). During his term of office, the ambassador, who changes annually, makes himself available on a voluntary basis for advertising measures for the DGzRS, which is mainly financed by donations.

Sander was a member of the Else Lasker Student Society until his death .
