Eine Liebe in Deutschland is a Franco-German feature film by Polish director Andrzej Wajda from 1983 based on the novel of the same name by Rolf Hochhuth .
action
Brombach is a German village on the Swiss border. A father travels there with his son Klaus. You want to find out about an incident that took place in this village during World War II, 1941. It is the story of the man's mother and Klaus' grandmother, Pauline Kropp. However, they meet with rejection from the village population. One would rather forget this story.
Pauline Kropp runs a vegetable shop. It's her husband's greengrocer who is at the front. Pauline's life is extremely difficult. She receives help in the business from the Polish prisoner of war Stanisław (Stanislaus). Stanisław is sympathetic to the German woman. She treats him courteously. A tender love story slowly emerges from the collaboration. Pauline is aware of what she is doing and the dangers of it, but the lonely woman plunges into a passionate love affair.
The love affair is not entirely hidden from the villagers either. Pauline and Stanislaw are denounced anonymously . The untersturmführer Mayer, Pauline is actually devoted to the investigation of the case leads. He gives her several opportunities to get out of the affair lightly. However, the pressure from the village population is stronger. Pauline has to go to a concentration camp, and Stanisław is sentenced to death and executed.
background
The shooting took place in addition to the studio recordings in West Berlin in the Baden-Württemberg towns of Efringen , Eimeldingen and Tumringen . The Polish Allan Starski and the German production designer Götz Heymann created the sets . The costumes were designed by Krystyna Zachwatowicz and Ingrid Zoré .
Reviews and assessments
- Lexicon of International Films : The melodramatic parts of the film are bold to the limit of kitsch, the characterization of the characters, especially the Nazi henchmen, remains clichéd, the references to the present (Pauline's son researched the events in 1983) seem convulsive. Only towards the end there are some scenes of depressing intensity and parabolic character.
- Der Spiegel , 45/1983: A major German topic with a great historical-political background with an international cast for an international audience, the tragic love of a German woman for a Slavic slave laborer under the sign of the swastika, the literary model by an internationally recognized German writer from staged by an internationally recognized director from the East: The last time this cinema disaster was called " Group picture with lady " after Heinrich Böll , and the German martyr of forbidden passion was called Romy Schneider . This time too, in “A Love in Germany” by Rolf Hochhuth, it should have been Romy Schneider. Now it is Hanna Schygulla, who the French Eurokino group Gaumont tries to heave with slowly annoying persistence onto the orphaned throne of the interesting German woman with a past: She also animates this Pole lover Pauline with the slightly somnambulistic smoothness and lard of Maria Schell for gray times . Like the film in general, we want to quickly forget that the director of the film is called Andrzej Wajda.
- Andrzej Wajda : Unfortunately, the template hardly told what actually happened and only described the events in general and briefly, with a few details. However, I was unable to reconstruct actual life in a small German town during the war. I didn't know reality and had to fall back on fictions. The German audience immediately felt this lack of reality, which gave them the opportunity to more easily reject the problems raised in the film. I'm not sure I wouldn't react in the same way to a German film production on a Polish subject.
