The Innocent Wizard is a Polish feature film directed by Andrzej Wajda in 1960.
action
The film is set in Warsaw in 1960 . Bazyl is a young doctor and jazz drummer . He lives spartan in a one-room apartment and dreams of better times. The individualistic young man dyes his hair blonde, is popular with girls, but incapable of binding. The young women bore him too quickly. His work as a sports doctor for a state boxing club also bores him and does not challenge him. In the evening he performs with his jazz band and then hangs out in bars. His friend Edmund accompanies him.
Edmund would like the success with women that Bazyl has but does not use. In a jazz bar, Edmund sees a young girl and persuades Bazyl to help him get to know the young woman who is accompanied by men. Edmund drives his taxi to the pub when the couple leaves the bar. The young man gets in, Edmund drives off, giving the girl no chance to get in too. She remains on the street with Bazyl. Bazyl's plan was to go back to the bar with her and say that Edmund would come again. However, the young woman cannot be persuaded.
Bazyl accompanies them to the train station. She lives outside Warsaw, but lets the last train leave and spends the night with Bazyl. The night is characterized by intellectual, ironic conversations and tender approaches. When dawn came, Bazyl fell in love with the unknown girl. However, he leaves his apartment, animated by his friends from the jazz band. When he returns, the girl has disappeared.
Bazyl sets out to search across Warsaw, but cannot find it again. He only knows her invented name "Pelagia" and doesn't even know in which suburb of Warsaw she lives. He returns home disappointed and finds Pelagia, who has meanwhile prepared tea for breakfast. He tries not to show that he is in love. When Pelagia leaves his apartment, he doesn't stop her. However, she turns around in the stairwell.
background
The film shows a new generation in communist Poland, which is still shaped by the experiences of war and youthful hunger for freedom, but cannot find its place in the new society. In jazz they find a form of expression for their longings. The jazz pianist and composer Krzysztof Komeda, who provided the film music and later achieved world fame through his music to Rosemary's Baby , was also a doctor like the main character Bazyl and came to jazz while studying medicine. The director of Rosemary's Baby, Roman Polański , and Krzysztof Komeda as himself can be seen in a small role as the bassist of the jazz band .
The film had its world premiere on December 17, 1960 in Warsaw. It was shown in German cinemas on April 20, 1963 in the film theater of the State Film Archive of the GDR Camera in Friedrichstrasse , Berlin-Mitte and at least 1965 in the BALI Berlin-Zehlendorf . The film had its television premiere in Germany as early as 1963 on West German television; it was broadcast on December 17, 1973 in the second channel on East German television . The film was shown on 3sat on August 6, 1992 . In 2002 the Berlinale showed a restored copy as part of a retrospective on the young European cinema of the 1960s.
In the GDR, the film was announced in all media under the title Innocent Magician .
Reviews
“A sensitively traced, dramatically and dramatically remarkable love story that goes far beyond melancholy and pessimism. The departure of a young generation towards a new social order is only addressed indirectly, but the film clearly shows that the vacuum between 'yesterday and tomorrow' cannot be filled with the shame of perplexity.
